BRAVE: innovation through greener chemistry

Clever Bioscience biocatalysis research project receives major Italian funding

Lombardy Government founded Clever Bioscience srl for its part in the BRAVE research consortium focused on development of innovative biocatalysts.

The funding is the result of a successful proposal to Regione Lombardia’s Collabora e Innova initiative to promote collaborative research and development project between regional companies and research organizations.

In total the BRAVE project received public funding of €3.5 million towards a total budget of €7.9m. Regione Lombardia has set aside 520,000 euros from its European Regional Development Fund to support Clever Bioscience work.

Advanced biocatalytics

BRAVE (Biocatalytic Reactions for Added ValuE) is exploring biocatalyst applications in therapeutics and diagnostics. It involves Clever Bioscience srl as part of a consortium of companies and public research organizations that includes CPC Bioteh Srl, ACS Dobfar Srl, D’Alesio and Santoro Srl, University of Pavia and Italy’s National Research Council.

Together, they will focus on the development of enzymes as biocatalysts for the production of high value-added compounds (HVACs), such as Active Pharmaceuticals Ingredients (APIs) and intermediates for pharmaceuticals and diagnostics fields. Resources shortage and ecological issues are increasing the demand of more sustainable production processes: biocatalysis offers a green approach for the bioproduction of HVACs by regio- and stereo-selective reaction under mild conditions.

Production processes based on enzymes are an environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional chemistry, compatible with European standards; they can encourage the reshoring of productions, particularly for APIs, and the reduction of costs and wastes, leading to new market opportunities and contributing to a more sustainable industrial future.

The BRAVE project is supported by Regione Lombardia through the PR FESR 2021–2027 programme, co-funded by the European Union.
